Temporary Marine Fisheries Technician II

Description of Work
The Temporary Marine Fisheries Technician II will assist with biological field sampling and laboratory work supporting the division’s work on perch and catfish. The employee will assist with conducting spawning area surveys for white perch and yellow perch in the Albermarle Sound area, juvenile trawls and seines, and ageing structure collection and preparation. The duties will require but may not be limited to the use of gill nets, plankton nets, trawls, seines, fish baskets and various types of water quality meters as well as laboratory equipment. Duties will also require coding and preparing biological data for computer entry. Extensive time will be dedicated to the preparation and sectioning of catfish spines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The technician needs to have some knowledge of fish species identification and the ability to learn and assist with techniques used in fisheries research and data preparation. A valid NC driver’s license is also required.

Training and Experience
Graduation from a community college or technical school with an associates degree in fisheries management and one year of experience in the fisheries industry including experience with vessel operation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
