The section also conducts day-to-day management activities that include establishing fishing areas and seasons, determining gear restrictions, setting and monitoring harvest quotas, and instituting appropriate size and bag limits. These actions are normally accomplished through the issuance of proclamations - a process where rule authority is delegated to the DMF Director from the Marine Fisheries Commission. During an average year, the section issues 180 to 200 proclamations. |
![]() Fisheries Management staff are also active in federal and regional management of migratory species, serving as technical advisors and committee members for coast-wide or regional fishery management issues. They work closely with the National Marine Fisheries Service, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the Mid-Atlantic and South Atlantic Fisheries Management councils, as well as with North Carolina’s Wildlife Resources Commission. |
