PROCLAMATION

RE: RESEARCH SANCTUARY

Dr. Louis B. Daniel III, Director, Division of Marine Fisheries, hereby announces that effective at 12:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 27, 2010, the following areas are declared RESEARCH SANCTUARIES, and are closed to the taking of shellfish:

I. AREA DESCRIPTION:

ONSLOW COUNTY

In closed shellfishing waters of Onslow County off the 1st and 9th Street Canals (Settler’s Beach Canals) in Surf City:

Reef #1 is an area approximately 15,400 square feet in area and is delineated by four pilings and signs as shown in the upper center of the attached map. The location of the pilings are as follows:

1. 34º 27.1370N 77º 31.3040W
2. 34º 27.1370N 77º 31.3200W
3. 34º 27.0930N 77º 31.3130W
4. 34º 27.0950N 77º 31.3070W

Reef # 2 is an area approximately 20,500 square feet in area and is delineated by four pilings and signs as shown in the lower center of the attached map. The location of the pilings are as follows:

1. 34°26.8660N 77° 31.3000W
2. 34°26.8630N 77° 31.3280W
3. 34°26.8490N 77° 31.3230W
4. 34°26.8480N 77° 31.2890W


II. GENERAL INFORMATION:

A. This proclamation is issued under the authority of N.C.G.S. 113-170.4; 113-170.5; 113-182; 113-221.1; 143B-289.52; and N.C. Marine Fisheries Rules 15A NCAC 03H .0103 and 03I .0109.

B. It is unlawful to violate provisions of any proclamation issued by the Fisheries Director under his delegated authority pursuant to N.C. Marine Fisheries 15A NCAC 03H .0103.

C. These areas will be used by the North Carolina Coastal Federation and UNCW to conduct research on oyster larvae/spat growth and survival.

D. N.C. Marine Fisheries Rule 15A NCAC 03I .0109, specifies that these Research Sanctuaries are in effect for one year, subject to renewal at the end of that year.
