Description of Work
(Note: This is a Temporary 11 month (40 hour week) recurring January – November Position)
The Marine Fisheries Technician I conducts creel census interviews in the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) to determine fishing location, fishing time, catch, species identification, size, and other biological parameters. The technician will also be required to interview captains of for-hire fishing vessels to collect fishing effort information. Other for-hire data collection responsibilities will include at sea biological sampling on headboats. The technician will organize, code, and compile data for computer storage and analysis. The ability to swim and to travel on-board large fishing vessels for extended periods. Must be willing to work extensively on the weekends. Must be willing to travel within Carteret, Craven, Onslow, Pamlico, and Beaufort counties. (This is a re-post. Previous applicants are still under consideration and need not re-apply.)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ability to communicate with fishermen, knowledge of local water bodies, the ability to identify fish. Basic computer skills for MS Word and MS Excel.Training and Experience
Graduation from a community or technical college with an associate degree in fisheries management; or graduation from high school and two years of experience in the fisheries industry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
