Description of Work
(Note this is a Temporary 5 month (20 hour week) position). This position will assist the stranding coordinator in responding to marine mammal stranding events to determine relationships between strandings and contributing factors. This position will assist with the collection of data from stranded marine mammals and sea turtles and to gain a better understanding of disease, health and life history of protected species that occur in North Carolina coastal waters. Duties include assisting with necropsies, disposal of carcasses, entering and maintaining stranding data and samples. The employee will assist with organizing and maintaining volunteers for prompt stranding response. The Technician II will respond to public inquiries for information about marine mammals and other protected species. Ability to lift moderate weight, swim, and work in adverse weather conditions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of marine mammals science and ecology; ability to use keys and guides to identify marine mammals and other marine species; basic computer skills to enter and maintain data, records and reports; ability to operate and trailer boats, motors, 4WD trucks on the beach, sampling gear, and other related equipment; basic understanding of commercial and recreational fishing gear; ability to communicate with volunteers, other agency staff, recreational and commercial fishermen and general public. Applicants under the age of 26 must be in compliance with General Statute 75A-16.2 – certificate of safe boat operation.
Training and Experience Requirements
Graduation from a community or technical college with an associate degree in fisheries management and one year of experience in the fisheries industry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience with vessel operation may be required.
