Contact: Patricia Smith News Media Invited to Speak With State Fisheries Director About New Gill Net Regulations MOREHEAD CITY – N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries Director Louis Daniel will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. Tuesday to answer news media questions regarding new gill net regulations. The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission on Thursday revised regulations to address interactions with sea turtles in the state’s gill net fishery and to settle a recent lawsuit filed in federal court on behalf of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. The regulations took effect Saturday, and apply year-round to all gill nets between 4-inches and 6 ½-inches stretched mesh that are fished as set nets in internal coastal waters, except in the Albemarle and Currituck sounds and their tributaries.
